Week 6

I have been getting on with the artwork for my advert which are shown below. Im trying to keep a similar style so ive been trying to use similar colours and shapes in most of the scenes and using the same methods to create them. I think if the scenes dont match then it could ruin the whole look of the animation. Ive also atrted putting some of the work into motion mainly just to see how its going to look when its put together. I need to start thinking about sound. I have some music in mind but need to check whether we have to use original music or not as its a student project.

Week 5

I have now finished the final storyboard im going to use for my advert and am now working on some of the artwork now that i Know what needs to be done. I need to create a few scenes like rolling fields, mountains, an industrial estate, a desert island, a dingy and a nice allotment etc. I have started by doing the rolling hills which are below. Im happy with how it looks but now need to be careful that this style is consistent throughout the whole animation. I can do this if I keep referring back to it.

Each layer on this image is seperate so I can create a 3D parallax effect by differing the speeds at which they move as well as their size. The idea is that the allotment will be floating through different environments like this one trying to send the message that your allotment can take your favourite place, or perhaps become your favourite place. I have also started on the artwork of the actual allotment which is below.

The allotment will morph into different kinds of allotments with different objects on it like speakers or a bouncy castle. The idea behind this is that the allotment can be whatever you want it to be and isn't just for growing parsnips.
Week 4

This week I have been trying to develop the style of the artwork for the ad campaign. I have been using Photoshop and Illustrator together to do this. I want to use bright bold colours and vector shapes to get the right look. I found this website which had a similar style to what I want to do and seems to be trying to target the same people I am. I like the bright natural look of the website. It even had a similar floating allotment to mine.

I have also been working on my storyboard. Because I am now thinking of taking a more surreal approach I think im going to have the allotment floating away from an industrial, bleak city to a colourful, happier place, like a desert island or through a field or into space. The allotment could then end up landing in a paradise-like place compared to where it started
Week 3

This week I have been developing my floating allotment idea. The concept behind the floating alotment is that it can take you anywhere, the place which you find the most relaxing or inspiring. Therefore I think my animation needs to represent this by placing the allotment in varying places. I have been developing storyboards to accomodate my concept. Instead of a realistic style I am now swaying towards a more surreal approach as this would be more fitting with the concept. I have been looking at other animations and videos to try and give me an idea of how I want the finished product to look. I looked at the Honda advert for diesel engines “Hate Something.” I really liked the bizarre feel and the use of colours to give a bright, warm feel which is a characteristic I want my advertisement to have.

After looking over the brief again I think I need to incorporate more than just an animated advert into my campaign. I have been thinking about using other methods for example print media, adverts on buses, taxis etc. , and web banners among other things.
Brief
Arthur Fowler

Promote having your own outside space for people in highly developed cities where there is a lack of outside space, see it more as a sanctuary, and try and modernise the appeal of allotments, as they’re in decline. Altogether rid the “Arthur Fowler” image of the allotment and try to make it into a cooler pastime.

This is a diary of my thoughts and processes throughout my first brief, the MPA Roses student awards brief.
It will document my activities week by week.

Week 1

I have chosen to do the “Arthur Fowler” brief which you can read above. After selecting our brief we were split into groups depending on the brief we were doing to brainstorm some initial ideas. We looked at various words and ideas typically associated with allotments. We talked about how allotments are often a place for relaxation and a form of escapism from the real world. People often socialise at allotments, particularly older people who may be lonely. It was clear that we had to get away from the traditional idea of the allotment and create something completely original.

I have begun sketchbook work, mainly looking at what would make the perfect allotment. I also thought about what I would want from an allotment and what it would need for me to own one. I tried thinking out of the box and came up with the idea of floating allotments which were able to rise above the smoke and dirt of the city above the clouds where the sun would always be shing and the air would also be cleaner.

Week 2

This week I have been continuing with my research and sketchbook work. I have been looking at some statistics about allotments and trying to find out what the current appeal of them is. I found that allotments are often used for socialising not only between other allotment owners but family and friends. Also growing is nearly always done on allotments so I think I would need to keep this characteristic. I have been looking at some videos on the internet for some inspiration. I looked at the Gorillaz Feel Good Inc. video which I remebered having a floating platform. I really liked the look and peaceful and relaxed feel of parts of the video and will try and incorporate this into my animation.

After a brief meeting with joanne I think I am going to stick with my floating allotments idea. The allotments will also differ between users and be customisable to make them a perfect sanctuary. I have been working on photoshop, illustrator and motion to try and decide on a style. Although it is quite ambitious I am going to use a combination of real footage and animation to create a television advert. My aim is to make the allotments look relatively real which I know will be a challenge.
